Smith's Famous Soup
Rigid Packaging Design
Design Brief
Smith’s Famous Soup is a rigid packaging project designed with the purpose of providing consumers with organic, heart-healthy, hand-crafted soup. Created using Adobe Illustrator, this conceptual brand was produced as a three-flavor arrangement while concentrating on FDA standard food labeling requirements.
Target Audience
Smith’s Famous Soup is pleased to serve individuals with healthy and organic products. They strive to provide individuals ranging from ages 18-35 with affordable food that uses organic ingredients as well as avoiding unnatural food additives and preservatives. Smith’s Famous Soup is proud to supply consumers with organic and natural ingredient products.
Problem Solving
To design this series, possibly the most challenging aspect was to create a design that reflected the brand’s quality and friendly personality. After researching other canned foods I found inspiring and expressed a similar message, I was able to analyze and start creating the layout.
Hardware Used
Xerox Versant 180 Press, and Titan 230 Guillotine Cutter.
Design Process
To start my creative process, I first performed visual research. My goal for this project was to use typography as my main design element. Since my target audience are consumers ages 18-35, I wanted a typeface that was friendly, but not child-like. To achieve this, I conducted visual research to compare different typefaces and fonts together. Since my goal was to create a design that is friendly and simple while also being professional, I decided that a san serif typeface is my best option.

After brainstorming the outline of the direction of my design, I began experimenting with typefaces and additional artwork elements within Adobe Illustrator. I researched organic ingredients and applied food icons to represent each soup flavor. While performing this step, I carefully followed the FDA requirements for food labeling. Including a proper net weight, nutrition facts, and including a preparation panel for cooking instructions.
After obtaining this crucial information, I created the label layout. The labels are 9.625” x 4” inches with a margin of 0.25” and bleed of .125” inch. I then applied my guides to ensure the placement of artwork and information. Once satisfied with the outcome of the design, I created the other soup series.
Output & Finishing
To produce the labels, I saved my Illustrator document as a PDF with crop marks and imposed the labels using a Fiery RIP software. After this I printed the labels on a Xerox Versant 180 Press and cut each one according to the finishing size using a Titan 230 Guillotine Cutter. Then I applied each label to rigid cans using glue.
